About Us
From a very early age I was always fascinated by nature. My early childhood was influenced by my mother, Kantaa Madan, who is a nature enthusiast and has a deep understanding of the healing properties of plants and herbs. She also taught me about the ancient system of Ayurveda, the traditional Hindu system of medicine, which is based on the idea of balance. Growing up in our family house in Delhi, my mom always had a garden growing. I especially remember the smell of the lemongrass! My mom, now 72, is a Senior Member of Kitchen Garden Association, (KGA) which promotes greenery in households of India and organizes seminars and meetings on related topics. Drawing from Mother Nature’s bounty and fusing the wisdom of the East we created a line of products that are 100% natural, contain no silicones, parabens, dyes, phthalates, formaldehyde, or artificial fragrances.
As I grew up, I felt the pull of formal education so I went on to study economics and law at New Delhi University then to NYU to pursue my Masters in both Tax and Corporate Law. I had a chance to visit Connecticut in 2000 and enjoyed all of the nature it had to offer. It always stayed in my mind, and I thought that someday I would return. After graduating from NYU, I worked in NYC for a law firm, but then returned to India to start a firm with my eldest brother. As much as I enjoyed my legal work, nature was calling me and I felt that I was not utilizing my creative spirit. I decided to embark on the journey of creating a nature-based business. How could I combine my love of nature, plants and herbs with a true interest in helping others?
At about this time, I was introduced to Shikha Jain who was producing natural and organic soaps by hand in Jamshedpur, in the state of Jharkhand (about a 3 hour flight from New Delhi). An engineer by trade, Shikha was employing only rural women, truly empowering them while bringing them out of poverty. All of the work by the women was environmentally sustainable, using plants and herbs from Shikha’s garden, and utilizing only solar electricity. Shikha and I agreed that we wanted to share this product more with the world. As a result, Atheava was born. Of course I needed to get my mom involved somehow, so she now runs Atheava in India as I now live in Connecticut. I still practice law, but Atheava has helped to bring more balance to my life as it has allowed me to be creative and to pursue my love of nature.
My mom could not be happier now that her knowledge of plants and herbs can be utilized and that our products are helping the lives of these women and their families.
